Students with Disabilities and Suspension Rates: A Cautionary Tale for School Districts (Episode 002)
SCOPE’s Journal for Leadership and Instruction is pleased to welcome Drs. Craig Markson and Kenneth Forman whose article, published in the Journal’s Spring 2022 issue, Students with Disabilities and Suspension Rates: A Cautionary Tale for School Districts, offers a thorough data profile of New York State districts’ suspension rate trends.
Among many important and often surprising findings they uncovered was the discovery that suspension rates and the percentage of students with disabilities were positively correlated.
Markson and Forman, respectively Director and Assistant Director of the School of Professional Development at the State University at Stony Brook and podcast facilitator Richard Bernato, explore the implications and root causes behind their findings and suggest more proactive strategies for reducing causes of suspension are in order.
